Tameside’s World Suicide Prevention Day Awareness Walk
Walk Together for Suicide Prevention
Walk with us through Tameside as we remember loved ones, raise awareness of suicide prevention, encourage open conversations and show the power of a community standing together.
Raising Awareness Across Tameside
Starting at Tameside Wellness Centre in Denton, we will undertake an approximately three-mile walk into Hyde town centre. The walk is expected to take between one hour and one and a half hours.
We will use public pavements throughout the route, helping make suicide prevention visible within our community and encouraging people to start conversations about suicide, mental health and the support available.
This is not a race or a sponsored challenge. It is an opportunity to walk at a comfortable pace, remember those we have lost and stand alongside everyone whose life has been affected by suicide.

Wear the Message
World Suicide Prevention Day T-Shirts
Help us make suicide prevention visible as we walk through Tameside. Wearing one of our event T-shirts can help raise awareness, start conversations and show that our community stands together.

Stand Out for Suicide Prevention
T-shirts are optional, but we encourage everyone taking part to order one if they can. A visible group walking together helps draw attention to the message of suicide prevention throughout the route.
Please note that the final design may vary slightly depending on availability and the time of printing. T-shirts must be ordered in advance and may not be available to purchase on the day.
By wearing the message as we walk, we can make suicide prevention more visible, encourage conversations and remind people across Tameside that support is available.

About World Suicide Prevention Day
A Global Movement
What is World Suicide Prevention Day?
World Suicide Prevention Day brings people, communities and organisations together every year to raise awareness, challenge stigma and encourage action to prevent suicide.
Raising Awareness Every 10 September
World Suicide Prevention Day, often shortened to WSPD, takes place on 10 September each year. It was established in 2003 by the International Association for Suicide Prevention in conjunction with the World Health Organization.
The day provides an opportunity for people around the world to raise awareness of suicide prevention, remember those who have died, support people affected by suicide and encourage more open and compassionate conversations.
Events range from awareness walks and candlelit vigils to community activities, educational events and public campaigns. Although marked on one day, its message is relevant throughout the year: suicide can be prevented and support is available.

The 2024–2026 Campaign Theme
Changing the Narrative on Suicide
The campaign encourages us to move away from silence, misunderstanding and stigma towards openness, compassion and support. Its call to action, “Start the Conversation”, reminds us that every conversation can help create a more understanding and supportive society.
Start the Conversation
Changing the Narrative on Suicide
Changing the narrative means moving away from silence, shame and misunderstanding. It means creating a culture where people can talk openly, ask for help and receive compassionate support without fear of judgement.
Every Conversation Can Make a Difference
We do not need to have all the answers. Taking time to notice, ask, listen and help someone connect with support can make them feel less alone and create an opportunity for hope.
Notice
Pay attention when someone seems withdrawn, overwhelmed or unlike themselves. A small change may be an opportunity to check in.
Ask
Ask how they are really feeling. Talking openly and sensitively about suicide does not put the idea into someone’s mind.
Listen
Give the person time and space to speak. Listen without judgement, interruption or pressure to explain everything at once.
Connect
Help them connect with appropriate support. If there is an immediate risk, seek urgent help and do not leave them alone.
What This Means in Tameside
Creating a Community Where People Feel Able to Speak
Through our awareness walk, candlelit vigil and year-round support, TASFund works to make conversations about suicide safer and more open. We want people across Tameside to know that asking for help is a sign of strength, listening can make a difference and nobody should have to struggle alone.
Raising Awareness in Tameside
A Tradition of Suicide Prevention
Awareness Since 2014
TASFund has hosted a World Suicide Prevention Day event in Tameside every year since 2014. Each event brings people together to raise awareness, remember loved ones, challenge stigma and show that support is available.
Over the years, our events have included community gatherings, awareness activities, remembrance events and candlelit vigils. Although each year may look slightly different, the purpose remains the same: to create conversations, remember those we have lost and help people feel less alone.

Support Beyond One Day
Our Commitment: Working Together
to Prevent Suicide
Suicide prevention cannot be achieved by one organisation alone. It requires communities, services and individuals to work together so people feel able to speak, find support and know they are not alone.
Suicide Prevention is Everyone’s Responsibility
TASFund works throughout the year with people who use our services, volunteers, local organisations, health services and community partners to strengthen support, raise awareness and create safer conversations about suicide.
Peer Support
We provide welcoming, lived experience-led spaces where people can talk, connect with others and feel understood without fear of judgement.
SAFE Tameside
SAFE Tameside provides a welcoming alternative for people experiencing mental health distress during evenings and weekends.
Bereavement Support
Our bereavement services provide understanding and connection for people affected by loss, including people bereaved by suicide.
Awareness and Conversation
Our events and campaigns challenge stigma, promote understanding and encourage people to speak more openly about suicide and mental health.
Partnership Working
We work alongside health services, local authorities, charities and community organisations to strengthen pathways into support.
Community Action
Volunteers, residents, businesses and local groups all help make suicide prevention more visible and strengthen support across Tameside.
Working Together Throughout the Year
Our commitment extends beyond World Suicide Prevention Day. We work throughout the year to provide support, strengthen partnerships and help create a more compassionate, connected and suicide-aware Tameside.
Support Throughout the Year
Support is Available
You do not have to wait until World Suicide Prevention Day to ask for help. If you are struggling, worried about someone else or unsure where to turn, support is available.
